Sitting on an<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jukkapalmu\/6724996125\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> invisible chair<\/a> at the Koskikeskus Shopping Center (Kaivuriskaba &#8211; via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/kaivuriskaba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hannu Lammi<\/strong> is a buss-driver from the city of Tampere, Finland. He enrolled to a competition called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/kaivuriskaba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cKaivuriskaba\u201d (Digger-Competition)<\/a> the year 2011. There where six competitors.\u00a0 They competed over \u201cwho could sit for the longest time in a &#8220;Takeuchi mini digger\u201d. The winner would receive it (priced around 32 000\u20ac). The competition was organized by <strong>Jukka \u201cKaivuri-Jukka\u201d Mutanen<\/strong> who drove across Finland in a mini-digger the year before. He had made \u201ca page\u201d on facebook with the title: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Jos-yhteis%C3%B6%C3%B6n-liittyy-50000-fania-Ajan-minikaivurilla-Hangosta-Kuusamoon\/113837205306858\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">If 50 000 people like this page, I\u2019ll drive from Hanko to Kuusamo<\/a>\u201d. In a short time the page received near 100 000 likes. His performance was streamed online on the bambuser.com service and noted on national television.<\/p>\n<p>The competition begun simultaneously in six shopping centers, in six cities across Finland. Each digger had a webcam mounted, which <a href=\"http:\/\/img18.imageshack.us\/img18\/2978\/kimmonukkuu.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">streamed video of the men sitting, sleaping and eating<\/a>. They where allowed to have a daily 30min break, so in all they where confined to their diggers for 23hours and 30min each day (not allowed to lift their behinds). One after one the competitors quitted the race. At the end two men Hannu Lammi (age 36) and <strong>Kimmo Frisk<\/strong> (age 21) sat in their diggers for 6 months. At that point the competition was stopped by the organizer. By that time they had sat for some 180 days.<\/p>\n<p>The organizer had expected the competitors to sit for some two months but had underestimated the mens durability.. In an interview he explained that his underestimation of the mens durability was the biggest mistake he had made. The\u00a0 contesters where donated the mini-diggers in which they had sat for some 4320 hours.. It was not about money but if they where able to sell them for the starting price they would have earned 7,40\u20ac per. hour of sitting. Both contesters developed serious back problems due to their prolonged sitting. As blogged before <a href=\"http:\/\/no-chair-design.tumblr.com\/post\/20893470231\/science-proofs-it-no-not-sit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sitting is the worst thing one can do for a living<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We met mr. Lammi when working with the xxx_group for the<a href=\"http:\/\/mediapyhat.rajataide.fi\/2011\/09\/landing-points\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Landing Points <\/a>festival organized by<strong> Jussi Koitela<\/strong> in Tampere. For Landing Points we conducted a study of shopping centers of Tampere. We looked at their environmental design and the designs impact on customer behavior. This was achieved by conducting various sorts of field exercised and interviews. We made the study incognito in places like<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/32082863\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Ikea, Tampere.<\/a> In all some 58 separate experiments in shopping centers where made during a day. One of them being an interview with Mr. Lammi. At the time we met him he had been sitting for 149 days and the competition had three finalists. The competitors had bad-mouthed each other the month before and where filing law suits against each other \u201cfor threatening\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iltalehti.fi\/uutiset\/2011101714582357_uu.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Details in Finnish<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The interview was made at Koskikeskus. Kilpailussa oli kuusi osanottajaa ja sen tavoitteena oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 ken istuu pisimp\u00e4\u00e4n &#8220;Takeuchi\u201d minikaivurissa. Kilpailun voittaja saisi n. 32 000\u20ac arvoisen kaivurin omakseen. Kilpailun j\u00e4rjesti<strong> Jukka \u201cKaivuri-Jukka\u201d Mutanen<\/strong>, joka tuli tunnetuksi 2010 ajettuaan Suomen halki samankokoisessa minikaivurissa. Koko ajomatka toimitettiin verkkoon live-video l\u00e4hetyksen\u00e4 bambuser.com palvelun kautta ja siit\u00e4 uutisoitiin kansallisessa televisiossa.<\/p>\n<p>Kaivuriskaba k\u00e4ynnistettiin samanaikaisesti kuudessa ostoskeskuksessa, kuudessa eri kaupungissa. Miehet istuivat kaivureihinsa ja <a href=\"http:\/\/img18.imageshack.us\/img18\/2978\/kimmonukkuu.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heid\u00e4n istumisensa n\u00e4kyi suorana verkossa<\/a>. He istuivat kaivureissaan y\u00f6t l\u00e4p\u00e4\u00e4sens\u00e4, kilpailijoille suotiin vain 30min tauko p\u00e4iv\u00e4ss\u00e4. Pieniss\u00e4 eriss\u00e4 osallistujat luovuttivat. Lopulta heist\u00e4 kaksi Hannu Lammi (36 v.) ja <strong>Kimmo Frisk<\/strong> (21 v.) tulivat istuneeksi kaivureissaan 6kk miss\u00e4 vaiheessa j\u00e4rjest\u00e4j\u00e4 keskeytti pelin. Miehet istuivat kaivureissaan 23h 30min p\u00e4iv\u00e4ss\u00e4, 180 p\u00e4iv\u00e4n ajan.<\/p>\n<p>J\u00e4rjest\u00e4j\u00e4 oli odottanut, ett\u00e4 kilpailu olisi kest\u00e4nyt pari kuukautta mutta aliarvioi miesten p\u00e4\u00e4tt\u00e4v\u00e4isyyden. My\u00f6hemm\u00e4ss\u00e4 haastattelussa t\u00e4m\u00e4 kertoi, ett\u00e4 kest\u00e4vyyden aliarvioiminen on pahin virhe mit\u00e4 h\u00e4n tapahtuman tuotannossa teki. Molemmille kilpailijoille lahjoitettiin omat kaivurit, joissa he olivat istuneet n. 4320 tuntia.. Mik\u00e4li kilpailijat saivat kaivurinsa myyty\u00e4 saisi voitoilla katettua 7,4\u20ac palkan jokaista istuttua tuntia kohden. Esiinnyimme tapahtuman aikana Tamperelaisissa kauppakeskuksissa. Tutkimme ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6jen suunnittelua ja asiakkaiden k\u00e4ytt\u00e4ytym\u00e4st\u00e4 tekem\u00e4ll\u00e4 kyselyhaastatteluja ja omatoimisia k\u00e4yt\u00f6skokeiluja. Toimimme Ideaparkissa, Ikeassa ja Koskikeskuksessa suorittaen 58 erillist\u00e4 kokeilua p\u00e4iv\u00e4n aikana. N\u00e4ist\u00e4 yksi oli Lammin haastattelu. Haastatteluhetken\u00e4 t\u00e4m\u00e4 oliistunut kaivurissaan 149 p\u00e4iv\u00e4\u00e4 ja oli yksi kolmesta kilpailijata. K\u00e4ynniss\u00e4 oli my\u00f6s lakijupakka kun kilpailijat olivat <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iltalehti.fi\/uutiset\/2011101714582357_uu.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">haastamassa toisiaan oikeuteen \u201cuhkailusta\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Haastattelu suoritettiin Koskikeskuksessa.
