Tested the Smart-Splitter today. It works but does not feel rewarding.
Negotiating a Kaoss Pad 3 purchase. I have a chance to get a used older model for 200€. This would be the biggest investment I’ve made to music.
Working on the Ihme-days demo presentations. It’s slow but made a neat drawing of a c-tape.
Reading “In the Flow” by Boris Groys. We bought the e-book with a group and there are so plans to write a critique of it in some online magazine. The text Kylmälä, Salusjärvi & Ylikangas recently published feels nagging in relation to Groys, who celebrates the event fullness of the contemporary museum.
I don’t agree that “… art in flux is better documented than ever before, and the documentation is better preserved and distributed than traditional artworks”. Because even though people take photos and make videos no one is building an index. A video is not a documentation, it’s spam before someone goes trough the trouble of cataloging it. Cataloguing builds references and context.
If you refuse an “unpaid” gig, you can make a thing about your refusal. If you accept it, you get to do a thing. Every “I refused an unpaid gig” story is the same. Every thing is different.
Leaving twitter is an adult thing to do. It’s about dissolving into the internet, not clogging it with jokes. Time to take the flow more seriously.
Browsed through a video explaining the Teenage Engineering crews design thinking. In the video Thomas Howard talked about what happens when we move from interfaces being metaphors for real life to interfaces being something else. I guess this is same change in tone is evident in art too. We’re moving from art being a representation of something to art being something else.
Getting prepared for the Ihme-days events on 1.4. We talked on Radio Helsinki about the “Hear and There+” project with Hassan Maikal (aka. Bizzyiam). The show is also available as a podcast which they are marketing with provoking catchphrase.
Went for lunch outdoors with Heini, Topi and Helena. We warmed sausages. Got news that I’m not among the group of invitees to continue the application process for the post of part-time Lecturer of the MA Degree Programme in Ecology and Contemporary Performance. I’m not as disappointed as I’d expect… I guess I was prepared for the rejection. Here is a link to the letter of interest I send them.
Pietari Kylmälä, Aleksis Salusjärvi, Maaria Ylikangas published a clever article Länsimaiden perikato ja uusfossiilisen aikakauden estetiikka (in Finnish) looking at how poorly art museums are equipped to counteract neo-liberal policies.
Got a nice email from Artsi museum about a potential writing gig for their upcoming exhibition. Last week I send them a relaxed inquiry about summer jobs.
They are using a Hergés Tintin to as an emotional symbol of the Bryssel attacks. Tintin’s foreplay with racism comes to mind. “Land of the Black Gold” is a bad influence. Found a text “Tintin in the Arab World and Arabic in the World of Tintin” excavating Hergés relation to the Arabic world. It’s not a flattering portrayal but avoids throwing cheap punches.
Learning about wordpress and other cms systems so that I could get the RSS feed thing going. This html works good but is a drag to publish. I already have a blog which I don’t use much. This kind of updates would be silly there but I’m having concerns that I’ll divide info to too many sites. Edit: Installed wordpress and trying that out. The default theme looks ok. Fiddled with some settings and added the rss to the blogfolio site too. This is working well. I have to think about images. Got the post-by-email system working too using Postie plugin. Thats an option for sharing thoughts on the go.
